How can MCT drive keto diet-driven weight loss?

Hey keto dieters! Did you know that researchers have found a potential connection between medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) and weight loss? Studies like St. Onge and Jones 2002 and Mumme and Stonehouse 2015 have found a strong link between MCTs, faster energy expenditure as well as a reduction in body weight gain.

So how and why does this happen?

Since MCT absorption in the body is much quicker and less complex than the usual digestive process, the liver converts some of the MCTs into ketones. When you’re on the keto diet and your body finds that it no longer has access to large amounts of carbohydrates, it starts looking for alternative fuels. Ketones are by-products that are created when the body begins to break down fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Additionally, consumption of MCTs have been found to increase an effect in the body known as thermogenesis - a metabolic process that occurs in your body during which it burns calories to produce heat. As a result, fewer calories are stored as fat.

MCT oil and MCT powders have become important ingredients in several keto lifestyles because not only have MCTs been linked to fat burning – they also contribute to increased satiety (or a feeling of “fullness”) and, more importantly, building and safeguarding lean body tissues. Alicia Vikander (who recently starred as Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider”) is one of the many Hollywood stars who have discovered and harnessed the power of MCT oil for body weight maintenance and fitness. According to her trainer, she ate a lot of fish and seafood as her main protein source, and included MCT oil in her diet as a major fat source.

How can you use MCT oil in your daily diet?

Mix MCT oil in your salad dressing

You can either use MCT oil or MCT powder to make power-packed keto salad dressings. Try options like a dairy-free keto Caesar salad dressing (which can also include extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil), or a MCT powder garlic dressing (this also has beneficial cancer-fighting properties and can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease). You can even add MCT oil to your favorite breakfast egg sandwich!

Add MCT Oil to your keto butter coffee

Most keto dieters love using MCT oil in their drink of choice – coffee! Not everyone loves the taste and smell of coconut oil, which is why the odor-less and flavor-less MCT oil addition makes it a versatile and easy-to-use ingredient. Drinking a few cups of keto coffee during the day helps you remain fuller for longer. You can either keep it simple by just mixing MCT oil, butter and a few tablespoons of coffee or you can add extra ingredients like zero-calorie sweetener, cinnamon powder or unsweetened cocoa powder to change things up!

Consume it as it is!

The simplest way to incorporate MCT oil in your diet is by just consuming 1 teaspoon of it each day. No matter how you choose to use it, always remember to begin your MCT oil and MCT powder journey by consuming only ½ a teaspoon and ½ scoop respectively, at first, so that your digestive system gets used it.
